11th November 2023 - Chris Roland

Picture
Chris is a teacher, trainer and methodology writer based in Seville. He has worked in Spanish mainstream education and the private academy sector and held positions with the British Council in Barcelona and in Damascus. He has published a number of methodology books for teachers through Pavilion Publishing & Media, UK, including Understanding Teenagers in the ELT Classroom (2018) and Structuring Fun for Young Learners (2020). Chris works with teachers across a wide range of contexts including as trainer for Pilgrims and tutors on both Trinity Diploma and Cambridge DELTA courses as well as being a Cambridge main suite (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE) and business English (BEC) speaking examiner.  He is particularly interested in classroom dynamics, the decisions that both learners and teachers make and the dialogue that happens between them.

Online: 09:00 to 12:00
Session 1: Putting the adult back into the classroom

Adult learners of English have a huge store of life experiences around which we can base classroom language practice. It is not just desirable but essential that we allow them to express themselves as whole people, whatever their language level. In this session, we shall look at some ways we can do this with all the way from beginner  to advanced level classes as well as with learners from business and professional backgrounds. Suitable for new teachers, seasoned veterans and trainers alike.

Session 2: Teenagers: Engage and Go!

In this session we shall look at techniques and activities that will get your teenage learners actively using English, using their imaginations, expressing themselves and rising to the challenges we set them. At the same time, each  recommendation will be a solid language task in itself that will contribute to improved grades and better exam performance. There will be examples and anecdotes from my own classes. Again, suitable for both newer teachers and the older hands among us.
